Our inaugural sixth-grade class experienced their first field trip of the year to historic Fort Snelling, which sits at the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers.

Among other things, the students learned what school would have looked like in pre-Civil war times, what it was like to do laundry, the role of the Beureau of Indian Affairs in the life of the region, and the philosophy of medicine and surgery in the fort.

They also visited the commanders’ quarters and the blacksmith shop and learned more about the story of Dred and Harriet Scott, who met and were married at Fort Snelling and would later become one of the parties in what is probably the most infamous supreme court decisions ever – Dred Scott vs Sandford.

Thanks to all the parents who helped with the trip!
