The Robotics team received First Premium at the state fair.

The high-school robotics team at River Ridge is affiliated with FIRST, an acronym of For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, and competes in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). For the state fair, the team entered their robot in the design category of the education division, and has been awarded a ribbon each year. This year, the team was awarded a blue ribbon for First Premium in the design category.

Several members of the team attended the state fair, participating in demonstrating the capabilities of their robot to fairgoers, and describing the educational goals of FIRST.

The competition last spring was ‘FIRST Steamworks’ (www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMiNmJW7enI). The design is a result of the following goals: 1. to deliver gears as quickly as possible and with minimum error, for which the chute is used; 2. to allow gears to be picked up from the floor, for which the arm was designed, and 3. to allow the robot to climb quickly and maintain its position, for which the winch was designed. Last spring, the team placed 11th out of 64 teams.

This fall there are three off-season events, which are described at the team website (trinitytritonsrobotics.com). They welcome both new members and curious observers.
