On Friday, Trinity faculty viewed and discussed segments of an interview with Benoit Mandelbrot as part of a new initiative launched last year – the Faculty Colloquium. Four times a year, the faculty listen to a lecture or presentation, watch a video, or engage in some enrichment opportunity. The colloquia are great opportunities for faculty to grow as a community of learners and also to enrich their common interdisciplinary understanding of Trinity School. Benoit Mandelbrot is most famous for his work in fractal geometry, in particular the Mandelbrot Set. His interview highlighted his thoughts not only the wide variety of practical applications fractals have but also highlighted the value he places on the intrinsic beauty in fractal geometry.
